Behind the Scenes – Shooting a Freighter
One of the surreal moments for me in shooting the “Graveyard of the Great Lakes: A Shipwreck Hunters Quest to Discover the Past.” documentary was having Dennis Hale, the lone survivor from the sinking of the Daniel J. Morrell, assist me.
I was shooting video on a camera slider of a 6-foot model of the freighter he almost died on back in November of 1966.
Sometimes I’d glance over at him & he would be just staring at that model in his own world.
It’s a fascinating and riveting story of escape & survival that Dennis tells in the doc.
I used one of my GoPro’s to do time lapse inside a garage in Ohio where the freighter model was being finished.
No video that I know of exists of the ship so I was trying something different instead of just relying on using pictures in this film.
Sadly Dennis Hale passed away in September 2, 2015.
